Activists Tell Home Depot: "Enough is Enough!" 26 May

A group of concerned Calgary FAN activists gathered outside the Home Depot's Calgary Northeast store to protest the American chain's continued sale of rainforest products. Protesters handed out leaflets to those entering the store while others informed customers and staff about the environmental destruction occuring in the world's forests and how Home Depot is endorsing this destruction.
"Our protest is part of the Canadian Day of Action against Home Depot. We, as Canadians, want to send a clear message to Home Depot that we will not tolerate their continued sale of rainforest products," said activist Colin Curry. "The Home Depot has 43 stores in Canada, and all of them sell wood from threatened rainforests. Without a commitment from Home Depot to rid their shelves of these products, their expansion plans will spell disaster for the world's remaining rainforests."
In 1992, Home Depot promised to "...aggressively pursue...alternatives to rainforest and other endangered wood." In 1997, they promised that they would stop retailing ancient redwood. Home Depot has yet to follow through with either of these commitments. "With only 68 pristine rainforest valleys left on Canada's West Coast, now is the time for action," said Calgary's Cody Torgerson. "Every day they continue to retail ancient forest products brings us one day closer to the total extinction of the world's rainforests."
This is the 5th such action in Calgary in the past year, with 3 of those occuring within the last 3 months. GO CALGARY!

* Check your mutual fund to see if you are unknowingly investing in Home Depot.
