ACTION in Edmonton!
FAN Edmonton Takes on
Local Home Depot!
12pm M.S.T. 26 May 1999
Today, the Edmonton chapter of the Forest Action
Network took on The Home Depot. Activity occured inside the store while others stood
outside with placards and banners, handing out information to the public. A handful of
activists started at one end of the store, labelling ancient wood, while the others led
the Dead Rainforest Tour at the other end, speaking to customers through a megaphone about
the origins of some of Home Depot's wood products. This allowed the stickering crew a
decoy while plastering product warning stickers all over the ancient rainforest wood. They
went unnoticed by Home Depot staff, who were distracted by the touring crew. Eventually
the touring crew were booted out of the store only to try again 15 minutes later, this
time by entering the store's exit. This was quite successful at attracting customer
attention again, but of course, staff were more prepared for our entry, so the second tour
was significantly shorter than the first.
All in all it was a smashing success. Edmonton activists report that they were featured on
a minute and a half clip on the local evening news, and on the 10:00 news the clip was not
shown, and Home Depot ran two advertisements. The papers interviewed extensively, but no
coverage, again they contain Home Depot flyers almost every second day. Sounds like Home
Depot has stepped up the P.R. machine...
Edmonton FAN plans to visit Home Depot again
in the near future... Please stay tuned! Said Edmonton activist Ahlia, "Really it's
the most compassionate thing to do: demonstrate until they drop."
