Action in Ottawa!
Protest (in English
& French) in the Nation's Capitol!
11:30 am E.S.T. 26 May 1999
This morning, twenty activists descended on Home Depot, in Gloucester, Ottawa, Home
Depot's easternmost Canadian store. A megaphone was produced, and a Dead Rainforest Tour
in both of Canada's official languages was under way. Tour guides in the crowded store
drew customers' attention to cedar from Interfor (clearcut in Canada's ancient
rainforest), luan, ramin and mahogany products. The same tour was conducted by FAN in
Ottawa, at Home Depot's Kanata store two weeks earlier. Unfortunatly, this time, things
went a bit less smoothly as store staff tried to intimidate activists into leaving the
property. As one activists calmed flaring tempers, the tour carried on. Management decided
to call the police.
 After half an hour,
reinforcements arrived from Montreal and unfolded a large banner in the middle of the
store. Outreach was superb as activists engaged customers in freindly conversation.
Finally, the assistant manager agreed to speak with an organizer, and was presented with a
letter for the manager, demanding that Home Depot make a strong commitment to ban all wood
products derived from dead rainforests, as they had promised in 1992. Police arrived after
35 minutes, and the decision was made to move outside, where the protest continued for
about an hour. Quelle bonne journée en Ottawa!
