FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THE FOREST ACTION NETWORK AND FRIENDS OF THE ELAHO DEMAND THAT REVY STOPS SELLING RAINFOREST DESTRUCTION
REVY, 1503 Kingsway Ave., Vancouver: At 12:00 pm today, Forest Action Network (FAN), Friends of the Elaho and the FAN Action Van descended upon REVY hardware to demand that they stop purchasing ancient rainforest wood and stock their shelves with third-party, eco-certified wood. FAN is conducting dead rainforest tours telling REVY customers and managers where the wood on REVY's shelves comes from and providing proper labeling for endangered old growth wood in the store. A banner reading "REVY: Stop Destroying the Great Bear Rainforest and the Elaho" hangs in front of the store and the FAN Action Van is providing information about alternatives to REVY and pumping out music while black bears dance.
"We breathe the exhale of the rainforests. Most of Earth's remaining temperate rainforest is in British Columbia and unless irresponsible corporations like REVY stop buying stolen, ancient wood from companies like InterFor, the entire planet will suffer," says FAN activist, Amanda Swinimer.
REVY, and its subsidiaries Revelstoke and Lansing BuildAll are all owned by and purchase wood from the giant timber corporation, West Fraser Forest Products, who clear-cut ancient forests on unceded Native land. REVY stocks their shelves with ancient red cedar, Douglas fir and hemlock from the Great Bear Rainforest and the Elaho Valley in BC. One of their primary suppliers of rainforest wood is InterFor (International Forest Products), who is currently clear-cutting sovereign Native lands in the Elaho Valley, the Great Bear Rainforest and is threatening to further fracture the fragile ecosystem of Clayoquot Sound. REVY also purchases tropical rainforest wood products including mahogany, from the Brazilian Rainforest, lauan, from the rainforests of the Philippines and ramin, from the Borneo rainforest.
Due to growing international pressure, many large hardware chains, including Home Depot, Lowes Co. and B&Q in the U.K., have committed to going old-growth free. REVY has yet to commit to ending the destruction of old-growth forests and has stated that they have no intention of developing any policy on purchasing old-growth forest products.
"The only thing proudly Canadian about REVY is the endangered wood ripped from BC's rainforests that you find on their shelves," says Jonah Fertig, of FAN.
