COVE/MALLARD COALITION FOREST ACTION NETWORK
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 15,2000
Protest at Staples Inc.
Demonstrators Nationwide Call for an End to Forest Destroying Products
When: 12 Noon
Where: Staples Inc. 233 Warbonnet Dr. off of Highway 8, Moscow
Staples Inc., Moscow, Idaho - Today, National Recycling Day, activists across the United States are protesting the wholesale destruction of our forests by Staples, the nation's largest office super store. Demonstrations are planned at 50 locations from Staples Headquarters outside of Boston to the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Thousands of people and Staples employees will be educated on the environmental impacts of Staples paper policies which focus on profit at the expense of environment. In Moscow, outside the Staples at 233 Warbonnet Dr., activists from the Cove/Mallard Coalition and Forest Action Network (FAN) are providing tree free paper alternatives to the forest destruction that Staples sells inside. The protest begins at 12 noon.
"We are here on National Recycling Day to challenge Staples to start using recycled fiber in all of the paper it sells. Staples can't continue to sit on the sidelines while our forests literally disappear or are clearcut and converted into sterile tree plantations," said Jonah Fertig, of FAN. "Staples paper purchases fund the wholesale destruction of our forests when alternative sources of fiber like recycled paper are readily available - this is unconscionable."
The pulp and paper industry is the largest single industrial wood consumer in the US and in the world. Pulp mills in the United States consume more than 12,000 square miles of forest each year; almost half of all trees logged are turned into paper, and the percentage is increasing. "It is National Recycling Day and like every other day of the year our landfills are filling up with paper that could be recycled, yet Staples continues to operate as if our natural resources are completely expendable," said Julia Piaskowski of the Cove/Mallard Coalition.
The Paper Campaign is demanding that Staples:
-Immediately phase out of all wood and paper products made from old growth fiber.
-Immediately phase out of all wood and paper products made from fiber from US public lands and from the rainforests of British Columbia, Canada
-Immediately phase out all office furniture made by Sauder Industries, who is a subsidiary of InterFor, one of the largest destroyers of temperate rainforests in British Columbia
-Commit to achieving 50% post consumer content for all paper products within two years and begin an immediate phase out of all products that are 100% virgin wood fiber.
-Make available 100% post consumer paper and paper that is made from agricultural fiber available by allocating permanent shelf space and stocking it in all stores or other points of sale.
-Educate all employees, customers and suppliers on the benefits of recycled paper, recycling, the availability of alternative fibers, and the benefits of healthy forest resources.
