Deflagging the Upper Dean Channel

PRESS RELEASE September 28, 2001
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FAN DEFLAGS WESTERN FOREST PRODUCTS AND INTERFORS PROPOSED LOGGING
(Dean Channel, BC) Today, the Forest Action Network (FAN) launched a public campaign to deflag the entire upper Dean Channel on the Central Coast of BC, an area the size of Clayoquot Sound. Activists are heading out today on FANs flagship, the M/V Starlet, in order to prevent future clearcut logging.
Under the recent Great Bear Rainforest agreement, a total of 68 valleys have been placed under moratorium from logging for one or two years, while scientists determine whether logging should occur in these areas. However, Western Forest Products, Interfor and the Ministry of Forests have previously surveyed and laid out cut blocks boundaries; nearly all are clearcuts.
Surveyed areas have been marked with florescent plastic flagging tape. FAN activists will be removing this garbage from the rainforest.
"The moratorium is only a short-term reprive," states Dayna, a resident of Bella Coola, "The Great Bear Rainforest is not yet saved, and the logging companies are ready to head in with their chainsaws as soon as the moratorium is lifted."
Greg Higgs of the Forest Action Network adds, "The upper Dean Channel is a region of outstanding biological and cultural heritage. We are prepared to use whatever non-violent means necessary to ensure that Interfor, Western Forest Products and the Ministry of Forests never resume logging in the area."
