PROTEST AT CANADIAN EMBASSY
IN BONN, GERMANY
April 29th, 1997

BONN, GERMANY -- Today, 30 environmentalists joined the Nuxalk Nation in a demonstration at the Canadian Embassy in Bonn. German environmental groups Robin Wood and Urgewald, along with the Forest Action Network, protested Canada's continued clearcutting and human rights violations.

Greg Higgs of FAN climbed the 15 metre flagpole and replaced the Canadian flag with the Nuxalk flag. "The Canadian government pretends to voice our concerns. They do not represent us - they are telling lies and we are here to tell the truth. We have raised our flag to let our voice be heard," said Hereditary Chief Qwatsinas of the Nuxalk Nation.

This protest follows a press/parliament seminar on Monday in Bonn in which environmental and indigenous representatives (Lubicon Cree, Algonquin, and Nuxalk) accused Canada of continuing to be the Brazil of the North.

Collen McCrory of the Valhalla Society (New Denver, BC) attended the demonstration, stating that B.C. is lying to the European Community about its forest practices. She is meeting with European parliamentarians in Brussels this week.
