Threats of Violence Ingram-Mooto Internet Action Threat of Violence Against Peaceful FAN Activists 13 July, 1998 FAN ACTIVISTS THREATENED AND INTIMIDATED BY LOGGERS FAN activists were threatened with violence as they took images of road building operations in the remote Ingram-Mooto watershed this weekend. WFP employees stated that they considered FAN activists to be "eco-terrorists". They issued what can only be described as a stern warning - if any machinery is damaged the 19 guys on site "will be set loose on you". Until Saturday interaction betwen FAN activists and WFP employees had been amicable and co-operative, each side recognising the other had a job to do. "It is difficult to understand what has triggered such animosity. Our purpose is to bear witness to the destruction of this pristine wilderness-- not to damage machinery", said FAN representative Louise Molloy. "We are simply recording what this road actually looks like. If WFP is confident that their operation is complying with legal standards, what are they worried about? In fact they should be proud, not angry". FAN follows a strict code of non-violence, which extends to property damage. FAN has never engaged in the destruction of property. FAN activists arrived in the Ingram-Mooto on the 8th of July. They are on site with digital cameras, computers and satellite communications to let the world view for themselves the destructon that WFP has caused. |
