March 5, 2003 -- (Vancouver, BC) Today, members of the Forest Action Network (FAN) and Nuxalk First Nation staged a dead salmon tour of destructive farmed salmon in a Superstore grocery store at Grandview and Rupert, in Vancouver. Superstore is a retailer of farmed salmon that is believed to be supplied in whole or in part by Omega, recent builders of a fish farm hatchery in Ocean Falls.
Farmed salmon product in the seafood section of Superstore were labeled with stickers saying Farmed and Dangerous by protestors. The FAN and Nuxalk members then demanded a meeting with management of the store.
The Assistant Manager was then told by Clement Lam of the Forest Action Network, Superstore is not an enemy, but an important stakeholder. By selling farmed salmon, you are supporting the fish farm industry which is ruining the environment and ruining indigenous peoples way of life.
Chief Suxyaltwa and Chief Qwatsinas then asked Superstore to stop selling Omega salmon because of the building of the fish farm hatchery on their territory. They said that their environment and culture will be ruined by the fish farm industry.
Protestors then went outside with banners and marched around the store.
