Farmed Salmon and Your Health
Dioxins and PCBs

Farmed salmon have up to 10 times more PCBs and dioxins in their bodies than wild salmon. PCBs and dioxin are chemicals that build up in our bodies and can cause cancer high blood pressure, stroke among others.

Artificial Color

Because farmed salmon do not consume natural food like their wild counterparts, the resulting salmon flesh is an unappetizing gray. To make their product more marketable, fish farm companies add artificial chemical colorants to their fish feed. One of the chemicals commonly used was once used in a sun-tanning pill that has been withdrawn from use because of concerns that it can cause temporary blind spots and possibly damage the retina.

Antibiotics

Some of the antibiotics that are used in the fish farms are the same that are used by us. When we eat farmed fish that have been given antibiotics that are also used to treat human illnesses, these antibiotics may not be effective anymore to cure us because the bacteria have become resistant. Some of the antibiotics will also spread into the ocean and we will eat them when we eat shellfish that was caught around fish farms.

Fat

Farmed Atlantic salmon contain 70% more fat than wild Atlantic salmon and 200% more fat than wild Pacific Pink and Chum salmon. The composition of farmed salmon fat is less healthy than the same amount of wild salmon fat.

How to avoid farmed salmon

Altantic Salmon sold anywhere in Canada is always farmed. Do not buy Atlantic Salmon. You can also identify farmed salmon by its thicker white lines of fat and its often mushier feel. Don't be fooled by labels saying the salmon is "fresh" - if it doesn't say "wild" then it probably isn't. The best suggestion: ask before you buy.
