Protest against salmon farming spreads to Alberta
On September 10th two activists from Forest Action Network (FAN) hung a banner reading "JOEY'S ONLY FARM SALMON DRUGGED AND TOXIC" at Joey's Only Seafood franchise office headquarters in Calgary, protesting their continued sales of farmed salmon.

Joey's Only is the largest seafood restaurant chain in Canada, with almost 100 outlets from BC to Ontario. Nearly every one of their outlets offers farmed salmon to their customers.

Farmed salmon is drugged, toxic and unsafe to eat. It contains dioxins, PCBs, artificial colours, antibiotics and fat. Eating farmed salmon can lead to high blood pressure, stroke and resistance to antibiotics. Moreover, the pollution, escapements, diseases and parasites from industrial salmon farming in BC threaten the environment and wild salmon stocks on Canada's west coast.

FAN sent a letter to Joey's Only on August 1st, 2003, asking the company to stop buying farmed salmon. Company management refused to respond. Early yesterday, in a telephone conversation with the management, FAN again demanded that the restaurant chain stop selling farmed salmon. Joey's Only refused to comply.

According to Joey's Only management, their farmed salmon are bought from a BC company. However, they also claim that all their famed salmon comes from Chile, not BC. When asked to provide proof, representatives of Joey's Only again refused, claiming that salmon farming is not a problem in Chile, while admitting that it is a problem in BC.

"Salmon farming has a negative impact to the marine environment, whether it is in British Columbia, Chile, Scotland or Norway. And when the marine ecosystem the wild species depend on are disturbed by industrial salmon aquaculture, so do the livelihoods of commercial fisherman and local people that depend on this systems as food source." said Ed May, an anti-salmon farm campaigner of the Forest Action Network.

Forest Action Network urges Canadian and international consumers not to buy and consume any farmed salmon and if one has to eat fish, consume those that are caught locally and sustainably.
